The Lo family have recently refurbished their restaurant on Colchester’s Head Street to serve the very best of traditional oriental cuisine fused with today’s 21st century tastes and trends. “Fusion on a plate” best describes this contemporary restaurant’s new offering, known as the China Blue Restaurant which replaces the former buffet concept. The new refurbishment coincided with the opening of the first floor as the China Blue Lounge Bar.

Partner Chi Lo explains the strategy behind the new concept:

“With China Chef on Crouch Street in Colchester we have the very traditional Chinese restaurant serving an established customer base. With Head Street we knew we could be more experimental. The challenge was to take the best of the traditional and literally fuse with modern tastes and trends. So chopsticks are still an option at China Blue but gone is the communal style of sharing various dishes and instead our guests enjoy a beautifully presented and balanced plate of freshly prepared and complementary food – Fusion on a plate!”

House specialities include:- Chargrilled Marinated Lamb Cutlets: deliciously succulent, delicately fragrant and served with fried rice and fresh green salad; Soft Shell Crab with peppercorn salt and wasabi mayo; China Blue Mixed Seafood: prawns, squid and scallops, wok tossed with oyster sauce and fresh vegetables, complemented by the crunch of crispy noodles and “Sea –Spiced” Aubergine Rice.

The 70 seater restaurant’s contemporary design was the work of Chi’s brother and partner Nam Lo whose brief was to create an environment to complement this modern style of eating. Nam, who manages China Blue on a day to day basis, was also responsible for designing upstairs at China Blue with its comfortable leather seating and its state of the art technology.

Nam happily explains the whole new concept of the China Blue Lounge Bar:

“We believe the Lounge Bar offers local businesses and young professionals a pretty unique venue for Colchester. Modelled on the type of facility you find mainly in London, it has the personality of a private club but without the joining fee. We wanted to create the sort of venue where people relax after work or where “ladies who lunch” gather after a morning’s shopping at Willie Gees. We hold regular events such as a recent Jazz evening and the rooms can also be hired out for private corporate events. The plasma screens have already earned their keep in proving an attractive hook for parties held around sporting events.”

The Lounge Bar along with the adjacent private Blue Room can comfortably accommodate parties from as few as six to as much as 50. Larger parties can be catered for by combining with the restaurant downstairs.

China Blue is owned and managed by brothers Nam and Chi Lo and their cousin Ken Lo. The venue is currently available for  party bookings.

The Lounge Bar and the more secluded Blue Room are also available for private hire.

The Lounge Bar can accommodate up to 60 and is the perfect venue for a party. Again the two 42” plasma screens can feature anything from company show reels to pop videos on the best of the music channels.

The Blue Room seats 12 – 20 for an intimate party. Enjoy key sporting events on the 42” plasma screen with clients or family whilst our discrete staff serve you drinks and oriental eats in the privacy of your own room.
